If you ask for explanations for starting to use the fluorescent light bulbs instead of the traditional ones, you usually get two answers: the new type of light bulbs is 1) eco-friendly and 2) pocket-friendly at the same time. The fluorescent bulbs are economical in several ways: they can be used up to ten times a longer time than the “normal” bulbs, and the amount of emanated heat is smaller, therefore there is less air conditioning necessary, which is significant mostly for large offices. Furthermore, the fluorescent bulbs need three times less energy than the “old” ones, which helps to save both the Earth and your money.
Except for running a Toronto real estate agency, I’m always looking for ways to help my client’s lifestyle a bit more greener. When it comes to choosing which fluorescent light bulb to buy, you might get a bit confused by the wide selection in the shops. In order to help you decide while shopping for light bulbs, we have summed up some easy tips for you.
Mr. Bulb Right
These bulbs are produced in all shapes and sizes so the best idea is to bring the traditional bulb you want to replace to the store and match it with the available fluorescent bulbs. Be careful about the wattage – when replacing a traditional light bulb with the fluorescent one, you have to divide the wattage by four. So instead of a 60 watt traditional bulb, one 15 watt fluorescent bulb is sufficient. Also check the label if it’s suitable for dimmers, should you wish to use it in a dimmer light.
Where to use fluorescent bulbs
Think about the place where you are going to use the new bulb – if it is too hot with no or little air circulation, the fluorescent bulb won’t be a good choice here (for example in recessed ceiling fixtures). It is also important to take into account the fact that the fluorescent bulb needs one to three minutes to start functioning fully and it is not good to switch it on and off too frequently. So the fluorescent bulbs are best to be used in rooms where the light usually stays on for at least 15 minutes, otherwise the bulb could get destroyed too early.
The right light
After your light bulb has served you its time, you should always recycle it at your local recycling place. Be very careful if you smash an environmental bulb. There is some mercury in it, which is a poisonous heavy-metal. Do not try to clean it with a hoover. It is also dangerous to touch the mercury with bare hands. It’s better to clean the larger bits with a piece of paper. Then use some sticky tape to remove the remaining tiny bits and wipe the area with a wet cloth. It is also a good idea to open the window in the room for at least 15 minutes so that you prevent mercury exposure.
