It is quite a phenomenon that since time immemorial, men have gathered themselves around banner flags to show their loyalty to it for one reason or another. This custom came about because of the lack of uniforms that were not available in days gone by. flag pole installation is not only for the fighting nations though. Many organizations will proudly fly their pennants outside their headquarters, or outside their homes, to show that this is the recruitment office.
Many standards or pennants will show something on them which everyone will know represents the individual organization. For example, car dealerships will often have the logo of the car company advertising that the car is available there. If they are sole dealerships for one make of car in particular, then they will fly pennants so that people will know that this is the only place to get a particular model or make.
For organizations, sometimes emblems that are connected to the group will be embroidered onto the pennant to give it some historical value. Freemasons are a good example of this where the set square and the ‘all seeing eye’ identify them as a follower of that tradition. Although some would say that this organization would be better off not identifying itself due to some negative connotations, the masons themselves are only too pleased to be connected to it. They are proud to be associated with the cause that has helped so many people in the past.
The American ‘stars and stripes’ is another prime example of a country proud of its heritage. Each star represents a state that came into the union over some years. Before each and every state joined in, this standard had a different look altogether. At one time, the square full of stars was actually a circle of about ten stars which were all the states that were included at that time.
One pennant that would be unable to alter any of the design is the Australian one. This has the Southern Cross emblem on it which is a constellation of stars from stars showing over that area. The site of this has become synonymous with Australia and no one would confuse it with any other country in the world.
One thing to remember though if intending to fly a pennant outside a dealership or the home and that is that the shaft should be well embedded into the ground. High winds and severe weather could uproot this post which could prove to be a great liability if anything untoward happened. Indeed, high winds have been known to blow whole roofs off so making sure the post is not likely to fall over is a necessity of the highest importance.
Firstly, make sure that the post is long enough for holding up the pennant, plus enough in the ground to make it very stable. Also make sure that once it is in situ that it is not leaning to one side. This is easily achieved by checking with spirit levels so do not even contemplate using these gadgets. Lastly, make sure that the cement mix being used is strong enough to hold the whole thing. A wobbly post is just as dangerous as one that is not planted firmly. Make it very firm and it should not cause any problems in future.
